Reflections on a decade as Editor-in-Chief | | Celebrating Jürgen Kurths, Our Departing Editor-in-Chief | Professor Dr. Jürgen Kurths has led Chaos with excellence from 2016 to 2025. During this time, Chaos has become a leading platform for nonlinear science and complex systems research. We are eternally grateful for his dedicated service, passionate leadership, and invaluable contributions to the journal.
| My ten years as editor-in-chief of Chaos have come to an end. [How time flies!] I vividly remember the beginning. A decade ago, I was a newcomer to this role, but the AIPP team helped me tremendously—and together we have achieved a great deal. We opened Chaos to new and challenging fields, from social sciences and economics to epidemics and Earth system science, with a strong focus on climate change. We introduced modern methodological directions such as higher-order complex networks, nonlinear stochastics, reservoir computing, and advanced AI techniques—though never black-box AI. We expanded the advisory board to include active members from across the globe and showcased Chaos at major conferences, most notably in Beijing last year with over 1,000 participants. These efforts have attracted a vibrant community of scientists to publish with us. I am deeply grateful to everyone at AIPP, our wonderful editorial board, amazing reviewers, and our incredible authors for ten exciting years of collaboration and support. I hope you will continue to champion complex systems perspectives in the future.
| - Professor Dr. Jürgen Kurths, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany | | | | | Under Jürgen's diligent stewardship, Chaos has seen an extraordinary decade of growth. Since 2016: Published articles have surged by 126%. Plus, the journal Impact Factor has risen to a record high of 3.6—ensuring that the journal remains a Q1-ranked* title in nonlinear science. | |

As we celebrate 10 incredible years of his leadership, we want to express our deepest gratitude to Jürgen for the energy, vision, and heart that he brought to the journal. His passion for nonlinear science has inspired a global community and helped Chaos grow stronger and become more connected and influential than ever before. So, cheers to you, Jürgen, and for the wonderful order you have brought to our Chaos!
